With Land Rover's clever Terrain Response system of a single, rotary dial to control the all-wheel-drive system, the Sport was both surefooted and simple to use. That said, when the Sport was working properly it was actually formidable off-road. And you can forget about any sympathy from the locals. Of the three engines, it's the turbo-diesel that probably has the widest appeal since it uses less fuel than the V8s and will be better suited to life in the bush.īut that's the catch, right there: While there are die-hards who are prepared to trust a Range Rover Sport in the wilderness, many four-wheel-drivers are not.Īnd not only is the Rangie Sport more likely to break something or stop for some reason on the other side of the black stump, parts and expertise will also be harder to find. The pick of these vehicles right now is the Series 2 versions which got a better, more modern range of engines with the old 4.2-litre petrol V8 and the 2.7-litre turbo-diesel making way for a three-litre twin-turbo-diesel, an interesting 3.6-litre V8 turbo-diesel (which disappeared from price-lists in 2011) and a much more efficient 5.0-litre petrol V8 with the option of a supercharger. In fact, you'd never pick it as a rebodied Discovery, and it certainly looks like a Range Rover should, even if the Sport tag seems a bit generous. Inspired, cutting-edge engineering made the design a masterpiece sloppy build quality by a disgruntled workforce made the finished article a potential time-bomb and money-pit.Įven so, it seems a bit odd that the same line in the same sand seems to apply to even the more modern Range Rovers, and the Range Rover Sport built from 2005 to 2013 is no different.īased on the Land Rover Discovery 3, the Rangie Sport is nevertheless shorter, wider, lower and overall more compact than the donor car. Those that 'get' them, love them and wouldn't consider anything so working-class as a Toyota LandCruiser or Nissan Patrol, but the hard-core bush-bashers out there tend to look down their noses at the British bruisers. Range Rovers are a bit of an acquired taste in Australia and seem capable of eliciting a pretty mixed response.
